Vertigo Relief, Dizziness Relief, Dizzy, Meniere’s Disease Relief, Vertigo, Dizziness, Meniere’s , Meniere’s DiseaseVertigo and dizziness are some of the main reasons a person visits their primary care doctor. In fact, as much as 6% of visits are due to dizziness. After the age of 40, 2 out of every 5 people are affected, and it continues to become more common as a person ages. Episodes can range for mild to chronic and severe.

It is important to know the difference between dizziness and vertigo. The terms are often used interchangeably. However, they are not the same condition. Here are a few ways to know the difference:

Dizziness is known for

  • A feeling of lightheadedness
  • Loss of balance

Vertigo has the following symptoms

  • A feeling that the person or the things around him are spinning
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Problems with balance
  • Nystagmus

Another similarity between vertigo and dizziness is the fact that they are both attributed to vestibular issues, further connecting them and adding to the confusion. The vestibular system is made up of the nerves that connect the ear to the brainstem and cerebellum and the inner ear. It is responsible for transmitting proper signals about the position of the body to the brain.

How Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care Helps Vertigo Patients

The two bones located at the top of the neck, the atlas and axis vertebrae, have the job of protecting the brainstem. A misalignment in this area can put pressure on the brainstem, thereby distorting signals being sent from the vestibular system and leading to episodes of dizziness or vertigo. These misalignments can occur after accidents that directly affect the head or neck. Signs may not show up for many months or years after the incident.

A study was performed involving 60 vertigo patients who received adjustments from an upper cervical chiropractor to realign the bones of the upper neck. All of them saw improvement in the severity and frequency of vertigo attacks. Out of the 60, 48 saw complete resolution of their vertigo.
