One may feel that if he can just get that spot in his back or neck to crack he will feel much better. Most people have experienced this. A person may even ask a friend to do this if it is in a place that is not easily accessible. A “bear hug” from behind may feel like it is the cure needed for getting to that hard to reach spot in the mid-back. However, strong caution is advised against performing any self-manipulation without consulting a professional.
A situation was reported of a woman who was accustomed to cracking her neck on her own. She presented with symptoms of a severe headache, neck and shoulder pain, and feeling generally ill. It was discovered after numerous tests that she was in danger of dying from a blood clot due caused by a tear in the vertebral artery. This occurred due to self-manipulation. It is a very dangerous practice, and we highly advise against it.
If a person feels that they need their back to crack, the best way to find relief for that discomfort is to seek the care of an upper cervical chiropractor. One needs to make this a priority if he or she experiences any of the following symptoms:
- Vertigo or dizziness
- A clicking noise in the neck with side to side movement
- Tenderness in the spot below the skull, above the neck, behind the ears
- Pain in the shoulders, neck, or back
- Tingling or burning in the toes or fingers
- Lower or middle back pain
- Loss in range of motion
- Migraines or unusual, frequent headaches
- Inability to rotate the head to either side
- Changes or sensitivity in vision
- One leg is a different length than the other
- Trauma that occurred to the head, neck, or shoulders and resulted in a concussion
- Scoliosis
